prologue
“good morning balkan” is a searching project in interdisciplinary field among art, culture and society that is represented at this instant by the series of art exhibitions “good morning, balkan” and by discussions panel “xenos-living and working in diversity”. this initiative was first held in 2003 in athens art centre, then in the national museum of romania in bucharest (2004), national gallery of albania in tirana(2005), national gallery of kosovo in pristina and at the gallery of the city of trieste in italy (2006) and will be presented in others capitals of europe in the following years.
located in the south-eastern part of europe the history of balkan would touch the confines between the orient and the occident, between roman catholicism civilisation in west, the byzantium orthodox’s in east. in the beginning of the nineteenth century national countries were created from the dissolving of the big ottoman empire. in european history balkans was always a place for hegemony, supremacy and influential spheres between the great powers of west and east. immediately after the end of world war two many a balkan countries fell under communist regimes, such as tito’s yugoslavia. after tito’s death and the fall of the iron curtain in nineteen eighty-nine many of the unsolved conflicts came into surface and found their way through violence. nowadays balkans consists of many people and small states, consists of many contrasts in ethnicity, culture, religion and economic development and its fighting its way toward full membership in eu.
by means of my cycle “good morning balkan” and “xenos-living and working in diversity” i seek to answer these questions in my diploma work:
1.-how deep is the history of this region sealed in our conscience?
2.-what is the situation in nowadays balkans and what does its future look like?
3.-what can the role of art be in this situation?
4.-what is the place of artists and culture-makers in the societies in which they live and what responsibilities are they willing to take?

abstracts
the diploma work “good morning balkan”-reflections about the representation of art and culture of the countries of central and southeast of europe - is an comparison between past and present of balkan and their reflection in art and culture. in these past years, in west europe there has been a myriad of presentations of art and culture coming from countries of south-eastern europe. many of these exhibitions started from the geographic notion of this artistic region and were self-consciously called balkan.  in this diploma work a profound analysis of one of this big representation, such as that of the famous curator herald szeman’s “blut&honig” in essl collection in klosterneuburg, is made. the description and the analysis of this project is put at a balance with my “good morning balkan” project, that unlike a big and concentrated project was percepted in many years scattered in many south-eastern europe capitals as an efficient dialog with actors from different cultural backgrounds.
to the representation and analysis of both cultural projects has been added the thoughts and the analysis of experts from different scientific fields about the history, mentality and cultural potential of south-eastern europe.

cccb - centre de cultura contemporània de barcelona

fate velaj-analysis
